Since 2014, 20 vehicle manufacturers have recalled over 28.8 million vehicles that contained defective airbags in what is now considered the largest vehicle recall of all time. Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that an additional 35-40 million vehicles will be recalled as well.

Numerous safety reports have shown that airbags manufactured by Takata, a Japanese auto part supplier, may inflate explosively and shoot out metal fragments. Although Takata has suggested that the cause of the defects was the improper storage of chemicals at one of its plants, investigations are ongoing.
